    Injury/Illness
    Premature Birth

Casper had to be delivered at 35 weeks and 3 days due to my (mother's) type 1 diabetes causing a problem with the placenta. At first, we thought everything was going to be OK because he came out crying and pink. Within 22 hours things started to go downhill and he was transferred to the NICU care at the hospital we were at. A few hours later his breathing continued to get worse so they took an xray and found a pneumothorax, or hole in his lung. When they attempted to pull air out of his chest cavity it didn't work and they had to emergency sedate and intubate him so they could perform surgery in his NICU room to put a chest tube in. The NICU we were at was not a high enough level for his care so he had to be medically transported to a different hospital. Thankfully, he is on the mend and will be OK. During this time, his dad had to stop working to take care of our toddler at home. Our family is currently split up as we take turns caring for both our boys in two different locations. We hadn't planned on this loss of income or extra medical costs with Casper.

    There are no family updates.
