    Premature Birth

After I (mommy) was diagnosed with Preterm premature rupture of membranes at 16 weeks, baby Callan was not expected to make it to viability, let alone survive after birth without severe disabilities. Well, he had other plans. At 23 weeks pregnant I was admitted to Sanford Health in Bismarck (4 hours from my home) for the long haul, with the plan of staying pregnant as long as possible. After 3 weeks, Callan decided it was time to come Earthside. Born at 26 weeks and 2 days, weighing in at a whopping 1 lb 14 oz, he was perfect. His lungs are extremely underdeveloped, which was to be expected with having very little amniotic fluid for 10 weeks. He was intubated immediately and has been on various amounts of breathing support since birth. He has been fighting for his life since day 1, and is doing such an amazing job so far. We are one month into our NICU journey. I've been put on unpaid maternity leave, which will expire about the same time we expect him to come home. I'm currently staying in a hotel, while my fiance and 14 month old daughter are at home 4 hours away. It's extremely hard to be without them, but I know I have to stay here for baby Callan. He needs someone by his side fighting with him. He's such a little warrior and I'm such a proud mama.
