    Name
    Julie Bonk
    Injury/Illness
    SLE, systemic lupus erythematosus

I am a 45 year old wife and mother of two who was diagnosed with lupus over 10 years ago. I have been unable to work for the last 5 years due to the deterioration in my health. I do receive Social Security Disability benefits but because of the short time I was healthy enough to work its not even enough to cover groceries for a month. Aside from my Lupus I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease as well as degenerative joint disease. I have had well over 10 surgeries on my spine and joints for fusions, joint replacements, for injuries sustained from the degeneration of my joints and to "clean up" areas to prolong getting other joints replaced.

My husband who is an Army Veteran and Union welder has been the sole provider for our family for a number of years and has always worked long hours to make a comfortable living for our family. Recently he had to take a medical leave from work to have spinal surgery himself which left us with only Disability benefits from his Local Union which are only 1/4 of what he makes working. Due to the physical nature of his job he can not return to work for at least 4 months or longer. We have already had our house go into forclosure, we are behind on all of our utilities with shut offs looming, our vehicle which is nearly paid off is at risk of being repossessed. I have never been as stressed out as I have been lately which makes my Lupus even worse. I have missed doctor appointments and cut out prescriptions that aren't 100% necessary to save money. I utilize every food distribution in our area to help cut our grocery bill. I have even started canning so that nothing goes to waste. This is my last hope for assistance as I don't have anywhere else to turn.

Not much has changed with our situation as we continue to fall behind and my Lupus continues to flair. I also had a doctor appointment this past week and unfortunately the joint replacement I had less than 3 years ago has to be removed because the arthritis has grown around the artificial joint causing it to fail and so my last option is to have the joint fused. This is not what my doctor was hoping for given my age and the fact that the fusion will create a significant mobility issue in my right foot. I ask that if the lord has put it on your heart to help us financially or with prayer we would be greatly appreciative. We have little family and friends who are able to help us since my parents have both passed away and I no longer have much contact with my siblings. I will be having surgery in less than 2 weeks and will update again soon. Thank you for taking the time to read our story!

I had hoped and prayed that our situation would have slightly improved at this point but unfortunately it's gotten worse. Our vehicle loan has now been charged off. They haven't repossessed it yet but I have anxiety that any day now that will be the case. We have paid on this loan for over 6 years and with only 7 payments left ($5,580 with late fees) we are going to lose the only reliable vehicle we have. Our cell phones will also be shut off if the past due amount of $510 isn't paid by Friday October 13th My lupus continues to worsen and I haven't been able to get out of bed for two days. My husband is getting better and PT is going well so we're hoping the surgeon will feel comfortable to release him back to work when he goes to his follow-up visit on 11/3/23. I will keep looking for assistance for Veterans, Lupus patients and Families with children despite most organizations replying that they have no funding left for the year because so many are struggling right now. I will also continue to pray that god puts it on someones heart to help us in what has been the most difficult time of our lives. I am so greatful for you taking the time to read our story. God Bless!
