The Fecher Family
Our Story
My son West was born very early, at only 23 weeks 2 days due to a placenta abruption. We initially tried to delay delivery at the hospital but ended up needing a crash C Section and West was born weighing 620 grams (1 pound 5 ounces) and 10.5 inches long.
We were unsure if he would survive, but he has been a fighter! He's now been in the NICU for a over 11 weeks. He will likely be in the NICU until approximately May 2025 based on his current needs, how early he was born, his low birth weight, and the severity of his lung disease. He has had a collapsed right lung, pneumonia, and at times over inflated lungs, and at other times required 100% oxygen support. He is currently requiring a specialized ventilator to provide him the oxygen support he needs through a breathing tube.
This unexpected NICU journey truly has been a roller coaster emotionally and in every other aspect. We have been trying to balance my recovery from a crash C section, being on unpaid leave from my job as a social worker, taking care of my toddler who is almost 2 years old, our regular bills (rent, utilities, student loans), and the medical bills that are starting to accumulate (including health insurance, copayments, deductibles), etc.
Any support during this time would be greatly appreciated by our small family as we navigate this journey and try to stay positive.
