The Hammond Family
Our Story
We found out we were pregnant after Thanksgiving, and that it was twins a week before Christmas. Due to hyperemesis (excessive vomiting during pregnancy), I was removed from work because it isn't acceptable while working in the medical field and having patients. When I lost a lot of weight in the beginning of the pregnancy, I was put on IV medications at home and both my doctors and employer denied the option to work from home or with restrictions.
As the pregnancy progressed, things became more and more difficult. I was on short term disability with FMLA for as long as I could, but it was only a portion of my income. With having to drive an hour from home for my weekly appointments, and keeping my other child enrolled at daycare so we didn't lose it, the costs were to much each month. I was able to buy some things and gifted some things for the twins, but when I looked into local programs for assistance, I was met with disappointment.
At 30 weeks gestation, I thought I was having Braxton Hicks contractions but I was in active labor. My boys decided it was time to join this beautiful crazy world and the providers were unable to stop the labor unfortunately. The twins were born early and they have been in the NICU ever since.
Having to drive home each night to be with my other children and return each morning, is causing more financial strain for the family. With the cost of parking and limited people to assist with care for my other children, staying at the hospital all the time is very difficult. The twins father was let go from his job and I do not know when I will can return to work being the babies were born so early. Even though their dad is actively looking for employment, he is torn between working and being with his children. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
