    Premature Birth

On November 11th, at 33 weeks 4 days pregnant, I woke up with left side pain. After a few hours, I called my MFM doctor and was assured it was nothing to worry about and did not need to be seen. I continued to have pain throughout the afternoon and decided to be assessed at Labor and delivery. They were not concerned about my pain but my BP was slightly elevated. They decided to admit me for observation. Throughout the night my BP continued to rise. I was put on magnesium and was told we may need to deliver that night. The medicine stabilized my BP but the doctor said I would need to deliver on Saturday at 34 weeks. However, my BP increased Thursday night and was told we would deliver on Friday. After a very painful c-section Hazel was born at 3 pounds 9 ounces. She had to be intubated initially due to the magnesium I was on but was taken off all respiratory support within a few days. She is doing well but is having difficulty with oral feeds, She has now been in the NICU for 22 days and counting.

Hazel was discharged today at 4 weeks old. Not quite 5 pounds. She will need a follow up with cardiology at 6 months for an ASD.

I only have 8 weeks paid leave which would mean I would need to return to work when she is only 2 weeks old adjusted. I would like to stay home at least another 6 weeks so she can avoid as many germs as possible until she is a little bigger and stronger.
