The Nowrojee Family
Our Story
My name is Hormazd Nowrojee. I was born with complex congenital heart disease and have never been able to work. I have undergone two open-heart surgeries, one in 1992 and the other in 1994 at 3 and 6 years of age at Miami Children’s Hospital in Florida, USA. At 8 years old I was given a pacemaker. The surgeries fixed my heart as best as they could and kept me alive but were not able to make my heart normal. As a result I have been through several medical challenges. My liver has cardiac cirrhosis due to my heart disease and now my kidneys are also affected due to my heart disease. In 2019 I was told by the Miami doctors that I need a heart and liver transplant which made my mother move us to Rochester, Minnesota in order to get the expertise of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. After a transplant evaluation at Mayo Clinic, we learned the transplant surgeries would not be successful due to changes in my anatomy caused by the open-heart surgeries I have had, and I was deemed ineligible for transplant. In January 2025 I suffered from an arrhythmia and was hospitalized for a long time. Since then I have been put on some very serious medications with side effects due to which I needs frequent labs and appointments. I now require lifelong care from the Mayo Clinic doctors. My mother too lives with multiple disabilities and has to go to dialysis three times a week.
My mother and I are facing a heartbreaking reality. In 2027, we risk losing our home due to foreclosure. With a mortgage of $151,000, we need your help to ensure we can stay in our town-home with an attached garage that is our sanctuary as it protects our health during the brutal subzero temperatures of the Minnesota winters. All of the subsidized housing in Rochester, MN has only open air parking lots. I take my mother to dialysis three times each week, and we both have frequent outpatient appointments. As a result, we must leave home almost daily, even during severe winter weather.
After February 2027, when my mother reaches her retirement age, our income will be drastically reduced to $2033 due to a long-term disability payment of $1017, from her last employer, stopping. This joint income is the total of our disability payments from Social Security as we are unable to work. Our monthly mortgage payment and association fee totals $1,319 which will leave us with only $714 for other bills. We are seeking a one-time $60,000 housing stability grant to reduce the mortgage principal and permanently make our home affordable by doing a recast to lower our monthly mortgage payment. The home provides the safe and accessible environment necessary for both myself and my mother. We are not in foreclosure and are seeking assistance before the home becomes financially unsustainable.
Your support means the world to us and will provide the stability we need to focus on our health. Thank you for your kindness. We deeply appreciate whatever best you can do for us.
