The Oppen Family
Our Story
My name is Kayla and I am mom to our new twins Tula & Arlen! I also have a 2 year old sweet boy at home. As a registered nurse, caring for others has always been at the heart of who I am, both in my professional life and at home. I never imagined I would find myself on the other side of the hospital walls, fighting for the health of my own children.
Financial Need:
Our twin babies were born prematurely at 32 weeks gestation and are in the NICU 90 miles away. Every day, we drive an hour and a half each way to be with them, adding significant fuel costs. At the same time, we’ve had to increase childcare for our toddler while we’re at the hospital, which has added another heavy expense on top of groceries and mounting medical bills.
Earlier in my pregnancy, I lost my job due to a reduction in force. I was fortunate to find new employment, but because I haven’t been with my employer for 12 months, I don’t qualify for FMLA. This means I am on an unpaid leave, and to keep health coverage I’m paying expensive COBRA premiums during maternity leave. My husband’s leave is also unpaid.
We are doing everything we can to stay strong for our family, but the financial strain has become overwhelming. Any support you can give will help us focus on our babies’ healing and bring them home without the crushing weight of these costs.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your generosity, prayers, and kindness during this difficult season.
