The Schnetzer Family
Our Story
In the last year, my life changed in a very unexpected way. I had back surgery to improve my quality of life after years of pain. At first things were going well, but a severe back spasm and complications set my recovery back. I brought medical restrictions to my employer, but they refused to accommodate them and terminated me after nearly 12 years with the company. Two coworkers had similar surgeries this past year and were accommodated, which made this even harder.
All of my complications-including a recent ER visit are directly related to the surgery, and I still haven’t been able to return to work. I have an upcoming EMG to evaluate ongoing nerve issues from the surgery and I’m in physical therapy several times a week. I'm working hard to rebuild function to get back to normal, but even simplest tasks are difficult, like getting dressed, makes daily life hard with limited strength and mobility. I’ve had no income for months while fighting for long‑term disability through my insurance. I’ve used my savings , 401k, and what I have left is locked in an ESOP I can’t access for years.
Some of my medical bills went to collections because my old insurance kept overriding my current coverage, causing delays and unpaid claims. I haven’t been able to file my taxes because one of my W‑2s was never issued. With my utility bill being near $800, I’m worried a shut‑off notice is coming soon. I’ve applied for county and government programs and waiting on a response. It is so overwhelming and I’m down to my last funds. I'm unsure how I’ll cover my next house payment. It truly feels like when it rains, it pours.
I never expected to be in this situation. I’m doing everything I can, but I need help to get through this setback and stabilize my life again. Any support means more than I can express. Thank you for taking the time to read my story, Matthew
Since posting my original story, I’ve had two additional severe back spasms — one affecting my right leg and another yesterday affecting both legs. Each episode has left me unable to walk for several days to weeks. This brings the total to three spasms since January 21, 2026. I’ve also had the consultation for the EMG and was approved for the scan to help determine the cause of these ongoing issues.

I'm still fighting with my disability insurance after 6 months they now have denied me even with documents from multiple doctors saying I can't work and I'm going through contesting this now i don't understand how they can do this. There denial is completely false saying I didn't submit any limitations, and I've sent tons the document they used as an example even had them on it and ive been told this is normal for them well its flat-out cruelty to me.
I know I'm not the typical person you see on here, but I really need help bad the hardship this has caused is great and I'm not sure what I can do.
I've asked for a referral to Mayo clinic but im not sure if they accept my insurance I will know more Monday April 27
