The Life They Built Together

Before February 3rd, life for Travis and his family looked a lot different.

Their days were filled with the rhythms of a close-knit family life: summers exploring Maine before returning home to New Jersey, hiking through Vermont with their dog Roscoe, cooking meals together, and watching movies as a family. Travis especially loved cooking with their daughter, Madison.

Travis and his partner, Ashley, met in high school on the Jersey Shore, growing up in the same surfer and skater circles. What started as a close friendship quickly became something more. She describes Travis as funny, kind, intelligent, and someone who always showed up for the people he loved. 

The Heart of the Family

Travis and Ashley's daughter, Madison, was born at Jersey Shore Medical Center and spent her early years on the Jersey Shore. She began kindergarten in New Jersey before the family moved to Vermont over winter break, where they have lived ever since. She is about to graduate from eighth grade and will begin high school this fall.

Adventurous. Brave. Smart. Creative. Kind. 

Madison has always shared a special bond with her dad. Travis often called her his "little best friend" and would tell her he loved her "more than the moon, the stars, and the candy bars."

Being a father was one of his greatest joys, and his family was always at the center of his world.

When Everything Changed

Today, their reality looks very different.

What began as a hospital visit for pancreatitis quickly became a life-altering medical crisis for Travis and his family.

On the day he sought treatment, Travis suffered a massive seizure and went into cardiac arrest. His heart stopped for five minutes before doctors were able to revive him.

In the days that followed, he remained critically ill but showed encouraging signs of recovery, communicating with loved ones and responding to treatment.

Then, everything changed.

Severe internal bleeding led to emergency surgery to remove necrotic portions of his colon. After the procedure, Travis fell into a coma. Though he initially continued to show signs of progress, a second surgery to close his abdominal wound brought devastating complications.

A Long Road to Recovery

Travis has now been hospitalized for over a year.

After falling into a coma, he developed polyneuropathy and myopathy—conditions that have left him unable to move his limbs or speak.

While he has regained some control of his head and is able to communicate through his eyes, he remains critically ill and dependent on a ventilator and feeding tube.

His recovery has been slow and uncertain.

Doctors say it could take years for his body to continue healing as his nerves and neurons slowly reconnect. Every day comes with new risks and challenges, including infections and medical complications that can quickly become life-threatening.

Carrying the Weight of Everyday Life

While Travis fights through his recovery in the hospital, Ashley has been carrying the weight of life outside of it almost entirely on her own.

She continues working full-time as a high school counselor while raising their daughter, managing household expenses, and navigating the emotional exhaustion that comes with constant uncertainty. During the school year, she is only able to visit Travis on weekends, making the distance and limited time together even more painful.

The financial strain has been overwhelming.

As a newer educator already balancing student loans and existing debt, losing Travis' support and income has forced her to stretch every dollar just to keep their family stable.

She has faced the pressure of considering additional summer work while also trying to remain present for Travis and their daughter during the hardest season of their lives.

At the same time, she lives with the fear that every phone call could bring devastating news. Because Travis remains on a ventilator and in critical condition, complications can happen suddenly.

The emotional toll of living in survival mode for more than a year has been immense.
